Wilderness and outdoor life

katalogbilde_1.jpg

This is a course for those who like to be outside, but want to do more than just go on trips. We will try to become comfortable in nature and use what it has to offer without overusing it

We make equipment, food and shelter experimenting with many materials we can find in nature. Although our ancestors knew how to do this there are few who do it now. We make food, equipment and a place to live and as far as we can we follow the whole process from raw material to the finished product. By following traditions that lie in the Norwegian culture we see how we can use nature without abuse. Some of our requirements are provided by our own forest and sheep.

We will experiment a bit, for example: how well we can sleep out without a sleeping bag, whether we can navigate in the fog without a compass, or how long it takes to make fire without matches.

Sami traditions contain much knowledge about living and travelling in natural surroundings. Some of this we learn by co-operating with the Sami reindeer-herding people.

For several weeks in the spring we live outdoors. During this time we put into practice all we have learned about living in nature with help of simple tools. There is also time for discussion of how we can co-operate with nature to the benefit of the community.
